UBC marine biologist heads study on cetaceans in captivity

This is a great - and sorely needed - project. Sadly, I suspect that it is already viewed as "tainted" by a vocal crowd because it is being done for Canada’s Accredited Zoos and Aquariums, who can be viewed as having a vested interest of some sort.

Still, lets see what comes out of this. I expect great science and a baseline for further studies.

“The first thing we need to do is come up with some scientific agreement among everyone that has a professional interest in it of how do we evaluate the well-being of a cetacean or a group of cetaceans that are being held in captivity?” he said Monday.

“And then we can go back and say, ‘How do aspects of their environment — such as pool size, interaction with humans, water quality — affect that?’”
