Space mining needs regulation, geologist says

There is probably something to this. Do we want a "wild west" situation where claim-jumping is possible? Do we want to allow asteroid orbits to be moved and possibly threaten Earth?

That said, if regulations came in, history suggests that there are countries that won't agree to them. That might lead to "flags of convenience" (think shipping). Then what?

This is probably a conversation worth starting now.

One Canadian geologist suggests a regulatory system is needed for any future mining in space.

Joe Hinzer said the mining industry on Earth is regulated by an international committee under a United Nations umbrella that sets standards in different countries.

”I think that’s the kind of approach that might work for extraterrestrial stuff as well,” he said.
