Canada to provide $243.5 million in funding for Thirty Meter Telescope

This is great news. I will admit to some cynicism in that the funding was not announced until an election year, but whatever - the telescope and its discoveries will have a greater long term impact than Stephen Harper anyhow.

The Thirty Meter Telescope, as the observatory is known, will dwarf what are currently the largest telescopes in the world, tripling the size of the lens and exponentially boosting astronomers’ abilities to study every important subject in astronomy: distant galaxies, supermassive black holes, and the birth of the universe, to name a few.
“(It’s) an amazing day for Canadian science,” said Ray Carlberg, a University of Toronto astronomer who helped spearhead Canada’s long involvement in the project.
