Canadian research advocates criticize ‘big science’ budget

I certainly think that there is a case to be made here (despite the fact that I am a huge fan of the commitment to the Thirty Meter Telescope) but Im not sure that this article makes it as clear as it could. Nonetheless, there needs to be balance between big and small science, and between pure and applied - this budget (and the ones leading up to it) certainly doesn't strike that balance though.

“You run the risk of having these wonderful labs with no people in them,” said Deborah Gordon-El-Bihbety, president of Research Canada, an alliance of stakeholders in Canadian health research. “They’ve not solved the problem of how they make sure they get the right balance.”
